Day 12: Roses Are Red …

by Paul Manoian on January 12, 2010

Roses are red …

Digital camera sensors contain varying numbers of red, green and blue pixels that detect red, green and blue light, respectively.  Based on my experience, cameras tend to be most sensitive to red colors.  Depending on the actual sensor used, it is very easy to saturate the pixels.

While I was at the grocery store this evening, I thought I would try out the iPhone’s red pixel sensitivity to see how much detail it could capture.  So, I headed over the cooler were they kept fresh-cut flowers and photographed one of the rose bunches they had for sale.

I was pleasantly surprised by the results!  The red colors were actually quite rich and the iPhone camera was able to control the exposure without clipping the highlights nor shadows.  The flower cooler was lit with fluorescent lighting to boot! What do you think?
