Day 15: Brushed Stainless Steel Table

by Paul Manoian on January 15, 2010

I really love today’s shot! It’s extremely simple of a boring object, but the lighting gives it a nice twist.

The photo is of an odd end table made from brushed stainless steel. I moved the table around a bit to take advantage of the only two light sources present: 1) An incandescent bulb overhead in front of me a bit giving a nice warm glow, and 2) A large window letting in the dull blue-gray light from an overcast sky behind me.

By holding the table just right, I was able to have each light source predominantly light one surface. As a result, the open lattice of the table’s sides is strongly accentuated.

I think the final result is pretty cool and it was achieved by simply moving my subject around in the light that was already present in the room. What do you think?

Terrific composition. I especially enjoyed reading your description of how you manuevered and worked with the light given to you by the scene. There is art all around us, all we have to do is look around and use our imagination.

Thanks! I’m going to focus on a few of the other incredible buildings in Downtown Detroit as the year goes on.
