Day 16: [Rock] Climbing to Heaven

by Paul Manoian on January 16, 2010

I had fully intended on using a shot from Alec’s soccer practice today for my 365 project, but there was no way to get close enough to the action with the tiny iPhone lens. So, I wandered around the Livonia Community Recreation Center a bit to find another subject when I saw … it!

I used to do a lot of indoor rock climbing in my single days and would regularly drive 2 hours to Grand Rapids for the only indoor gym at the time. Back then, the gyms were pretty straight and pretty boring. Times have certainly changed.

The rock wall at the Livonia Rec Center is incredible. For those of you that climb, it has 12 top ropes with additional routes with ratings from 5.6 to 5.12. In addition, the boulder routes range from V-0 to V-5. But, the best part is … [drum roll] … it’s 42 feet tall! It’s an awesome sight to see indoors in a suburban area less than 5 minutes from my home! :)

It’s too bad nobody was climbing at the time for my iPhone 365 photo. However, I’m sure they wouldn’t have appreciated me lying on my back under the ropes with a climber 30-some feet up above me anyway.

On Belay!
