I missed the Ice Sculpture event in Plymouth, Michigan last year and vowed I would attend this year. Unfortunately, I was not able to stop by to see the ice sculptures until the last day. To make matters worse, it was 48 degrees and raining! Ugh. By the time I got there, very little ice was left and the sun was setting. Late January is normally a deep freeze in Michigan, but this year was a fluke. This weekend was unseasonably warm. I would have been extremely disappointed to put all the effort into the sculptures only to have them melt before the end of the event (NOTE: It’s supposed to drop back into lower temps with a high in the 20′s this week.)
Very little detail was evident in the ice sculptures due to all the melting that had taken place. In fact, half of the sculptures were in pieces on the ground. Even so, I was able to find a couple of sculptures still intact. As luck would have it, the sun peeked through the gray sky for a couple of minutes allowing me to capture a few interesting photos with my iPhone.
I lined up this shot with the sun to provide some interesting back lighting behind the ice sculpture of, well, a sun! You can really see the structure of the ice in this shot, especially in the base.
Were you able to make it to Plymouth, Michigan for the ice sculptures this year?
