Day 5: Linotype Machine Line Casting

by Paul Manoian on January 5, 2010

I must admit I’m somewhat fascinated by Linotype machines.    They were introduced in the late 1880′s and printers used them to make newspapers and other circulars at the time.  Operated by a single person, pressing buttons released individual letters made from brass called matrices.  These matrices were then cast together to make words and lines of print for the newspaper.

I had an opportunity to study one up close and thought the matrices would be a good test of the iPhone’s focusing capabilities.  I was surprised by how much bokeh (foreground and background blur) I could actually get from the tiny lens.  What do you think?  Can you “read” them?
