Day 46: One Block Short of a Cube

by Paul Manoian on February 15, 2010

I’ve had my eye on some blocks for a while thinking they would make a cool photo for my iPhone 365 Project.  However, I was never able to come up with a fun way to photograph them.  I’ve tried a few things in the past, but the end result always looked a little blah.

I decided I would try something different and go for a high-key photo with the iPhone. This is normally done with strobe lights against a white background.  However, I didn’t have that setup available with just an iPhone.  So, I moved the blocks over to a well lit location and, holding a piece of white paper in my left hand, carefully curved it upward to provide a sweeping backdrop while taking the photo with my rights.  This allowed me to capture the scene with a continuous white background and avoid any hard corners.

I actually like the end result quite a bit.  While not a pure white background, the overall effect it still quite pleasing on the eye.  The shades of gray help emphasize the distance of the block.  I also like the depth of field effect that helps bring the missing block to the foreground.
