Difference Between Portraits and Snapshots Wrapup

by Paul Manoian on August 11, 2009

As I mentioned in my first post suggesting  a series on the differences between snapshots and portraits,   it’s a reasonable question.  If you were to ask the average person with a point-and-shoot digital camera, I doubt they’d be able to give you a answer.  Besides, they’re both pictures of a person, right?!

But, I’m a photographer, and a portrait photographer at that.  I took the challenge upon myself to help de-mystify the 5 keys things that can help turn your next shoot from just another snapshot into a piece of art.

In case you’re just tuning in, take a few minutes to check out the following articles …

1. Light and Exposure – Let there be light!
2. Focus and Depth of Field – Why’s everything so blurry?
3. Texture – It’s time to roughen it up a bit!
4. Composition – Is negative space actually … negative?
5. Color – Avoid mix and matching color and pattern combinations

The next time you have a camera in hand, keep these 5 things in mind.  Start off simply by applying just one at a time and you will soon find snapping snapshots a thing of the past.
