Detroit feels completely different in the early morning. The streets are quiet, the lights still glow against the skyline, and the blue hour creates this calm, cinematic mood that’s hard to find any other time of day. That’s exactly where Tyler’s senior pictures began. A senior at Canton Preparatory High School, he knew he wanted to head into the city for something that felt bold, urban, and authentic to his style.
We started the session downtown during the blue hour, that short window of soft, cool light just before sunrise. The reflections from the buildings added a smooth, modern edge that worked perfectly with Tyler’s laid-back vibe. As the first light of morning appeared, the tones shifted. The city’s glass and steel caught the golden glow of sunrise, and every shot took on a warmer, more dynamic look.
From there, Detroit came alive. We stopped by the Detroit Institute of Arts, explored the alleys that frame the city’s energy, and made our way up to a rooftop where the morning light hit just right. Tyler’s calm confidence carried through every location, giving his portraits a relaxed and effortless feel that stood out against the downtown backdrop.
Sessions like this show how a mix of timing, atmosphere, and location can completely transform a portrait session. Starting early gave us three entirely different looks — the cool tones of blue hour, the glow of sunrise, and the soft light of the morning. Each one added something different to Tyler’s senior pictures and captured a little more of his personality.
For anyone planning Detroit senior pictures or Canton senior pictures, an early morning start can be one of the best decisions you make. The light, the mood, and the stillness of the city all work together to create something truly one-of-a-kind.
