Usually not. Since we schedule sessions out in advance, there will likely be someone scheduled after you. If that happens, there is simply no way to extend you session. Sorry.
If you are trying to decide between two different lengths of session (e.g. 1 1/2 hours vs 2 hours), always pick the longer session. We will definitely use it.
If you are still unsure of the right session length, please feel free to contact us online or call us at (313) 883-9500 to discuss it.
Yes! Download Credits can be purchased to take advantage of the Instant Download of your online proof gallery. In addition, if you would like to order custom retouching like body sculpting and skin smoothing, you can order a Digital Proof instead.
Yes! In fact, we have an entire portfolio online for senior pictures with horses.
Of course, we do not supply horses (or any other animals) for sessions. The people in those pictures own the horses you see. They are just like family members to them. Having pictures pictures taken with someone else’s horse is like having pictures taken with someone else’s little brother.
Just like pictures we take with pets, there is never an additional charge to include your horse. So, please, just ask!
Our professional lab is located almost 1,000 miles away from Detroit. Since they will drop ship printed items directly to you once they are ready, picking them up directly from us is not an option. Shipping, handling and boutique packaging are added to each order based on the actual items that are to be shipped.
Absolutely, you can wear black for senior pictures. Black is timeless, elegant, and flattering on camera. It looks especially sharp against colorful or textured backgrounds. To keep the look interesting, consider adding layers or accessories for contrast and depth. Black works well for both casual and dressy outfits, but it’s a good idea to bring at least one other color to your session to give your gallery more variety.
Many parents choose to come to senior pictures, though it’s totally optional. Some seniors enjoy having a parent there for support, quick touch-ups, or help carrying outfits. Others prefer the independence of going solo. Either way, the focus is always on creating a comfortable experience that brings out your best. If parents do join, it can be a great chance to capture a quick parent-senior photo as a bonus.
No, photographers don’t usually provide a suit for senior pictures. Most senior sessions are styled by the senior themselves, so you’ll need to bring your own outfits. If you want a formal look, wearing your own suit—or borrowing one that fits well—is the way to go. A sharp suit can create a classic, polished vibe for part of your session and contrasts nicely with more casual outfits for variety.
Yes, you bring your own clothes for senior pictures. Most photographers encourage seniors to bring several outfits that reflect their personality and style. You should plan a mix of casual, formal, and themed looks if you want variety. Solid colors and layered pieces tend to photograph best. Avoid busy patterns or large logos. Bringing your own clothes ensures your photos feel authentic and personalized—plus, it gives you full control over how you present yourself.
Every image in the online proof gallery from your portrait session or wedding will be white balanced, color corrected and possibly cropped to make it look its best. You can selectively order blemish removal if you feel it is needed in additional to other common processes like teeth whitening, removing braces and even more extreme techniques like skin smoothing and body sculpting. There are few things that are more challenging to do in Photoshop, so please feel free to ask if you have any special requests after reviewing your proofs.
Yes! Online proofs are color corrected and, in most cases, may even be cropped and rotated. They are not “photoshopped” beyond that. But, you can order blemish removal on any any images from your online proof gallery if you feel it is needed! Options are available for full skin smoothing and removing braces as well.
Please keep in mind the size of the print that you are ordering to help determine if you should pay extra for one of these retouching options. Most people only order one of them for close up images that will be enlarged and hung on a wall in your home. It may not make sense to order it if you are ordering a small print and the subject’s face is relatively small in the overall image.
Yes! The easiest way to view all of the prices for small gift prints, Heirloom Wall Display Prints, art canvas products, gallery wraps, albums, downloadable images and more is to view one of our sample sessions. Simply click on any thumbnail image from one of the galleries and all of the available options and prices will pop up on the right side of the screen.
Of course we can! You can read them online here:
Every image is captured in full color. We are then able to custom convert those images to black and white individually based on your order.
Bad weather happens. Rain and wind are inevitable. We keep a very close eye on the weather forecast and will reschedule your outdoor session as soon as possible if we feel it isn’t conducive for you.
Even so, it really depends on your definition of “bad”! We actually reschedule sessions more often due to wind than anything else. But, we can still do your session if it’s windy, raining or even snowing. Please just keep in mind that anything over 5-8mph wind will likely blow your hair around.
If it’s raining or snowing, well, it’s a little more complicated. Assuming you don’t want rain or snow, we can simply reschedule your session in hopes of better weather. If you don’t mind rain or snow, great! We can still do your session! However, please keep in mind that under rain and snow conditions, we will not be lying on the ground to get different angles for your shots. we cannot risk getting rain drops or snow flakes on the camera lens during the session. They won’t damage the equipment; rather, it will make the image blurry at every spot where a water drop or snow flake touches the lens! Similar, we won’t change lens if it’s raining or snowing. Changing lens during foul weather would risk damaging the extremely sensitive (and very expensive) digital sensor inside the camera used to capture the images. So, we’ll select the best all-around lens for your session at the start and won’t swap it for different perspectives during the session until it stops raining or snowing.
Tipping for senior pictures is not required, but it’s a thoughtful gesture if you’re thrilled with the experience or results. A typical tip for photographers ranges from $25 to $100 depending on the session length and service. If your photographer went above and beyond—helping with outfits, guiding poses, or making you feel completely at ease—it’s a great way to show appreciation for their work.
To save money on senior pictures, consider booking during off-peak seasons or asking about mini sessions. Some photographers offer discounted shorter sessions with fewer outfit changes or digital-only packages. You can also save by sticking to one location, minimizing add-ons, and planning ahead so you’re fully prepared. Investing in a photographer with transparent pricing helps avoid surprise fees later on.

Don’t worry about picking a location … yet. You need to decide the “look and feel” for the type of session you want first. Once you know that, we can often suggest a few different locations that give you the end result you want!

It’s best to book your senior pictures at least 2–3 months in advance, especially during peak seasons like spring and summer. Popular photographers book up quickly, so early planning ensures you get your preferred date, location, and time of day. Booking early also gives you time to prepare outfits, scout locations, and make the most of your session.
Senior pictures usually take between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the session type and number of outfits or locations. Shorter sessions may focus on fewer poses and looks, while longer sessions allow more creative flexibility. If you’re planning outfit changes or multiple backdrops, allow enough time for transitions. Your photographer will help guide the timing based on your vision and package selection.
Senior photos typically take 60 to 90 minutes, though sessions can run longer based on outfit changes and location shifts. Some photographers offer mini sessions that last 30 minutes, while full sessions may be 2 hours or more. The best session length depends on how many looks or ideas you want to include in your gallery. Plan for extra time if you’re going to multiple locations.
Most seniors bring 2 to 4 outfits for their senior pictures. This allows for a mix of styles—casual, dressy, and one outfit that really shows off personality or interests. Your photographer may suggest outfit changes based on your session length and location variety. Having a few well-coordinated looks can add depth and personality to your final gallery without overcomplicating the shoot.
Most people wear 2 to 3 outfits during a senior pictures session. The number depends on your package, time available, and how many looks you want to capture. Many seniors choose a casual outfit, a more formal option, and a third outfit that reflects their hobbies or activities. Talk to your photographer to decide what works best for your session goals and setting.
You should wear 2 to 4 outfits for senior pictures to add variety to your gallery. Choose a combination that reflects different aspects of your personality—maybe one dressy, one casual, and one with a personal twist like a sports jersey or band tee. The right number depends on your session length and how many location changes you’re planning.
From a 1 hour senior pictures shoot, you can typically expect 30 to 60 high-quality images, depending on outfit changes, locations, and how quickly you move through poses. Photographers usually take many shots and later deliver a curated set of the best ones. The final number can vary based on your photographer’s style and session specifics.
The number of senior pictures you should order depends on how you plan to use them. Most clients order 10 to 20 favorite images for prints, albums, and announcements. Some order even more if they want a variety of wall art or photo gifts. Consider who you’re gifting portraits to and what display products you want when choosing how many to order.
People typically spend between $300 to $1,500 on senior pictures, depending on the photographer, session length, and products ordered. A basic session might include digital images only, while premium packages could include prints, albums, and wall art. Be sure to check what’s included and whether retouching, outfit changes, or location options are part of the price.
You should expect to pay anywhere from $300 to over $1,000 for senior pictures, depending on the session type and what’s included. Some photographers offer mini sessions at a lower rate, while full sessions with editing and print credits cost more. Consider the photographer’s experience, portfolio, and what’s included in the package when evaluating price.
For senior pictures, style your hair in a way that feels like you—but slightly more polished. You want to feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera. Avoid experimenting with brand new styles right before your session. Soft curls, straightened hair, or a natural blowout usually photograph well. Bring a brush, clips, or product for quick touch-ups between outfits or outdoor shots.
For senior pictures, wear your hair in a style that feels natural to you—but slightly more refined than your everyday look. Aim for a polished version of how you usually wear it. Avoid dramatic changes right before your session. Bring a brush or small styling products for quick touch-ups. If you’re planning multiple outfits, consider how your hairstyle complements each look and the settings you’ll be in.
It depends on the time of year. It depends on the time of day. It depends on the location. So, it depends.
I am regularly scheduling portrait session 6-9 months in advance and weddings up to 1-2 years in advance. So, simply put, don’t wait. Highly desirable weekends for the current year may already be booked as you read this. Even so, I can usually accommodate session requests within a week or two if you availability during the week.
My best tip is … contact me as soon as you know you’d like to schedule something!
To get cheap senior photos, look for photographers offering mini sessions or seasonal promotions. Mini sessions are shorter and more affordable but still provide professional-quality images. You can also reduce costs by limiting outfit changes or selecting just one location. Ask about digital-only packages and avoid costly add-ons like albums or prints upfront. Booking early or during off-peak months may also help you find better rates.
We love Pinterest as much as the next person. Really. In fact, we have HUNDREDS of Pins from our own sessions posted and many have THOUSANDS of re-Pins. Also, we often create shared Pinboards with clients so we can share photo session concepts together. But, they are just that … concepts. Our experience has shown that Pinterest is best used as an inspiration source. It should not be used as a blueprint or strict guideline for how a final photo should look.
It all comes down to this … the more time we spend together focused on recreating a photo we saw online, the less time we will have to create shots that showcase the unique character of you, your family, your … well … you get it.
It’s rarely too late for senior pictures. While most sessions take place the summer before or fall of senior year, photographers often offer sessions well into spring. If you need images for graduation announcements or the yearbook, check your school’s deadlines. Otherwise, you can still schedule a session that fits your schedule and captures this important milestone—even if it’s close to graduation day.
Well, that depends. We do outdoor, on-location session all year long … even in the snow! So, from our perspective, it’s never “too late”. But, if you are trying to have images in-hand to submit somewhere by a specific date, please ensure you schedule your session in advance as far as possible.
There’s no official dress code for senior pictures, but your outfit should reflect your personality and be appropriate for your session’s location and tone. Many seniors opt for outfits they’d wear to a nice dinner, a school event, or a family photo. Solid colors and layered outfits tend to photograph best. Your photographer may provide guidelines to help you choose looks that work well on camera.
Yes, you should smile in your senior pictures—if it feels natural to you. A genuine smile can make your photos feel warm, approachable, and confident. But not every image has to feature a full grin. A relaxed, neutral expression can also be powerful. A good senior session includes a mix of expressions so your personality comes through in every image.
Tipping your photographer for senior pictures is not required, but it is appreciated if you’re happy with the experience and results. If your photographer was especially helpful, flexible, or went above and beyond, a tip is a thoughtful way to show appreciation. Typical tips range from $25 to $75, but you can give more based on your satisfaction and the scope of the session.

Wearing makeup for senior pictures is recommended for most people, but it should enhance—not mask—your natural features. Light foundation, subtle contouring, and a bit of mascara or lip color can help even skin tones and emphasize your features under professional lighting. If you’re not used to wearing makeup, keep it minimal. The goal is to look like yourself—just slightly more polished.
For senior pictures, choose nail colors that are clean and timeless. Neutral tones like soft pink, beige, or clear polish work well and won’t clash with your outfits. If you’re wearing bold colors, make sure they complement your wardrobe. Avoid chipped polish, as your hands may appear in close-ups. Even natural nails look great when they’re well-groomed and clean.
Most people wear a combination of casual, dressy, and personality-based outfits for senior pictures. Think jeans and a favorite top, a dress or button-down shirt for a polished look, and something that reflects a passion—like a team uniform or favorite hoodie. Solid colors and simple patterns tend to photograph best. Bring multiple options so your gallery reflects all sides of your personality.
After our sessions, we love being able to share a “Sneak Peek” of the images with our clients on our blog. While our schedule doesn’t always allow for this, we publish sneak peek blog posts more often than not. We will email you after your session to let you know a “Sneak Peek” blog post has been published along with a link for you to share with friends and family on social media. PLEASE be sure you share it! Why??? Because we offer FREE Print Credits when others share and comment on your blog post!
We have published well over 500 “Sneak Peek” blog posts! Click here to read some of them!
The average price for senior photos ranges from $400 to $800, depending on the photographer, session length, and what’s included. Some photographers offer affordable mini sessions, while full sessions with outfit changes, multiple locations, and professional editing tend to cost more. Be sure to ask about packages, digital image rights, and print options so you understand what you’re getting for the price.
The best color to wear for senior pictures depends on your skin tone and background. Solid colors like navy, burgundy, olive green, and soft neutrals consistently photograph well. Avoid neon shades or patterns that compete with your face. Jewel tones are flattering on most people and help you stand out in both natural and urban environments.
The best month to take senior pictures depends on your desired look and school deadlines. Summer and early fall (June–October) are the most popular because of warm weather and lush scenery. Spring also works well for colorful flowers and softer light. Be sure to book early—prime dates fill fast with graduation season approaching.
The short answer is, “Nothing.” They are both digital images in jpeg format that you can download to your computer. The difference between the two is only in the method used to purchase them from your online proof gallery.
- Instant Download images and purchased “instantly” using Download Credits which can be purchased in blocks. The larger the block of Download Credits you purchased the greater the discount (up to 25%)!
- Digital Proofs are added to your shopping cart just like traditional prints and provide the opportunity to add retouching services like blemish removal and a whole lot more.
Senior pictures are creative, personalized portraits taken to celebrate your senior year, often in different outfits and locations. Graduation photos are usually formal cap-and-gown shots used for announcements or yearbooks. Senior portraits capture your personality and interests, while graduation photos mark the official milestone with your diploma and attire.

Simple, well-fitting clothes in solid colors look great in senior pictures. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and reflect your personality. Layers and textures photograph well, and adding accessories like jackets or scarves can add depth to your look. Avoid busy patterns and large logos, which can be distracting in photos.
You should take senior pictures between June and October of your senior year for the best weather, natural light, and scenery. If your school has early yearbook deadlines, plan for a summer session. If you prefer spring blooms or cooler temperatures, March through May also work well—just be sure to schedule in advance.
Avoid asking a photographer to exactly replicate another person’s senior pictures. Every session should be unique. Also, asking for unedited RAW files is generally discouraged, as they don’t represent the photographer’s finished work. Instead, focus on sharing your vision and trusting their creative process to make it come to life.
Don’t wait until the last minute to book your session, and avoid trying new hairstyles or makeup right before the shoot. Don’t wear wrinkled or overly trendy clothing you’re not comfortable in. Come prepared, stay relaxed, and trust your photographer—it’s about capturing who you really are in this moment.
Avoid neon colors, large logos, busy patterns, or clothing that doesn’t fit well. These can distract from your face or photograph poorly. Stick with solid colors and simple patterns that complement your features. Also avoid clothing that wrinkles easily or doesn’t reflect your true style—you want to feel confident and comfortable.
Wear shoes that match your outfits and make you feel confident. Clean, neutral-colored shoes are versatile and won’t draw attention away from your face. If you’re planning full-body shots, your footwear will be visible—so avoid overly worn or distracting styles. You can also go barefoot for a relaxed or beach session.
Wardrobe is one of the single largest contributors to a successful photo shoot. It is all about the right selection of color, textures and accessories. Select colors from the same color family and avoid tiny print patterns or clothing with words printed on them.
Some wardrobe ideas are available at:
For traditional senior drape pictures, wear a strapless or spaghetti strap top underneath. This helps the drape sit smoothly on your shoulders without visible straps. Make sure the underlayer is a dark color, especially if the drape is black, to avoid anything showing through. Bring safety pins just in case adjustments are needed.
After your photo shoot is over, you can expect your proofs to be ready in approximately 2 weeks from your session date. You will receive an email with an Access Code to your private gallery to review your proofs. Session fees include hosting your private online proof gallery for 10 days free! Online proof gallery hosting can be extended for only $2/day in one month increments. Proofs will be purged after the gallery has expired.
If you have been given a gallery access code, you can search for your images here:
You can buy senior picture outfits from local boutiques, department stores, or online shops like ASOS, Nordstrom, and Amazon. Choose outfits that fit well and reflect your style. Look for solid colors, flattering cuts, and minimal logos. It’s smart to try everything on beforehand to make sure you feel great in every look.
Detroit has tons of amazing locations for senior pictures. Popular spots include Belle Isle, the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Belt Alley, Eastern Market murals, and the Riverwalk. Each spot offers a unique vibe, from elegant architecture to bold street art. A skilled photographer can help match your style to the perfect location.
People take senior pictures in a wide variety of places—from urban downtowns and natural parks to high school campuses and unique personal locations. The best spot reflects your personality and interests. Popular choices include city streets, murals, gardens, lakes, and rooftops. Work with your photographer to find a setting that feels like you.
The best place to take senior photos depends on your style. Urban locations offer bold, edgy backdrops, while parks or natural areas create soft, timeless images. Iconic city spots, beaches, and personal landmarks all work beautifully. The best location is one that feels authentic and helps you feel comfortable and confident on camera.
Even though I regularly shoot out of a studio space, your session can take place at almost any location (including your home). Travel within 20 miles of zip code 48154 is included with every session for free. Even so, we love to photograph and new and exciting locations! Do you already have a location in mind? Great! Just let us know and we will do everything we can to accommodate!
High school senior pictures can be expensive because you’re paying for more than just photos—you’re investing in a professional’s time, experience, editing, equipment, and creative process. Many photographers also include consultation, location scouting, and post-session retouching. High-quality senior portraits are custom, not mass-produced, which adds to their value and cost.
Senior photos cost more due to the level of planning, customization, and post-production involved. You’re not just paying for the shoot itself, but also the photographer’s time before and after—plus high-end equipment, editing software, and the ability to create polished, professional images. These sessions are personal and crafted with care, which adds to the investment.
Yes! I typically post a sneak peek blog post within a week or so of you session with some of favorite images processed so far. After that, everything will be posted into an online proof gallery and the access information will be sent to you via email. Also, send us a Facebook friend request, and we’ll post some of the images there and tag you in them!
