Rose’s senior photo session felt like walking into a storybook painted in autumn colors. As a senior at Washtenaw International High School in Ypsilanti, she wanted her session to celebrate the beauty of fall, and Ann Arbor delivered. From warm sunlight filtering through the trees to the brilliant reds and golds that framed her portraits, every location was drenched in color and character.
We spent a crisp fall morning exploring Ann Arbor’s quiet nature trails and wooded paths, finding places where the golden hour light hit just right. Rose brought a mix of looks that showed her personality perfectly. Her first outfit, a dark blazer paired with a deep red skirt, gave her portraits a timeless, confident feel. It worked beautifully against the rich red leaves in the background. Later, she switched into more relaxed fall layers that softened the mood and gave her images a cozy, classic vibe that parents love to see in Ann Arbor senior photos.
One of the most meaningful parts of Rose’s session was incorporating her love of reading. She’s an avid book lover, so we found a beautifully painted Little Library tucked away among the trees and used it as a backdrop. The pop of color, surrounded by fall leaves, tied everything together. She brought one of her favorite books and sat beneath it, completely at ease, with the golden light wrapping around her like a warm blanket. Those moments captured the calm joy that comes from doing something you truly love.
As the light shifted, we moved closer to the water, where the trees opened up to reveal reflections of the season. The soft ripple of the river and the golden glow of late afternoon made this part of the session feel peaceful and cinematic. Rose leaned into the quiet, reading along the water’s edge and soaking in every bit of the fall atmosphere.
To finish, she brought out her flute for a few portraits that celebrated another part of who she is. The connection between her love for music and reading couldn’t have been more natural. The flute added a touch of elegance to the setting, creating some of my favorite portraits from the day. For anyone who wants to feature an instrument in their own session, you can find more inspiration here: Senior Pictures with Musical Instruments.
Rose’s session is a great example of how thoughtful details make all the difference. Her outfit choices, the fall locations, and the props she brought each helped tell her story in a personal way. That’s what I love most about senior portraits. It’s never about recreating someone else’s session. It’s about designing something that feels authentic and true to the person in front of the camera.
Fall is one of the most popular times of the year for Ann Arbor senior photos, and for good reason. The color, the light, and the atmosphere can completely transform a session. Whether it’s a favorite trail, a quiet park, or something unexpected like Rose’s Little Library moment, there’s always a way to make it uniquely yours.
