Some seniors want a simple backdrop for their photos. Others want something with personality. Derrick knew exactly what he wanted for his Macomb senior pictures and chose Detroit for the architecture, color, and morning light. We started during the blue hour while the city was still waking up, and the early glow created a calm and cinematic feel that worked perfectly for his style.

Derrick came in ready and confident. His wardrobe choices helped shape the entire session. He started with a sharp blue blazer for the dramatic blue hour look, then shifted into a polished dress shirt and tie once the golden hour light took over. Both outfits worked beautifully against Detroit’s mix of historic buildings and modern architecture.

We moved through several of my favorite Detroit spots. The brick textures and warm lights near the fraternity house set the tone for the start of the morning. From there, the graffiti walls added a bold splash of color that contrasted nicely with his formal look. The Renaissance Center gave us a clean, modern backdrop with striking lines and early morning reflections. We wrapped up at the Detroit Institute of Arts where Derrick also brought out his drum for a few images that represent a big part of who he is.

Parents often worry that early sessions might feel rushed or too dark, but mornings like this are incredible for photography. Derrick’s session is a perfect example of what is possible when light, location, and outfit choices all come together.
