Some senior guys count down the days until their senior pictures session. Others? Not so much. Michael, a senior from Sterling Heights, definitely fell into the second category.
By the time we started his senior pictures session in downtown Detroit during morning golden hour, it was pretty clear this wasn’t exactly how he wanted to spend his day. Honestly, I think his mom was far more excited about the session than he was. And if we’re being real, a lot of parents reading this probably know that feeling all too well.
One of the first things his mom mentioned was that she could never get him to smile naturally in pictures.
Challenge accepted!
The funny thing is, senior guys usually don’t need to become completely different people during a session. They don’t need forced poses, fake smiles, or over-the-top energy. Most of the time, they just need a photographer who knows how to keep things relaxed and low pressure long enough for real moments to happen naturally.
That’s exactly what happened with Michael.
We started the session around some of my favorite downtown Detroit locations with textured brick alleyways, graffiti walls, rooftops, and city streets that matched his laid back style perfectly. The urban vibe worked really well for him because nothing felt overly polished or staged. Instead, the session felt casual and natural, which helped him settle in without feeling like he had to “perform” for the camera.
And honestly, once I started showing him a few images on the back of the camera, everything changed. You could actually see the shift happen.
Suddenly, the session didn’t feel like something he was being forced to do anymore. He realized the photos looked genuinely cool, and from there, things became much easier. The smiles started happening naturally. The expressions relaxed. The confidence started showing up in the images without forcing anything.
That’s one of the biggest misconceptions parents have about senior pictures for guys.
A lot of moms worry that if their son hates pictures, the entire session is going to feel awkward from beginning to end. In reality, most reluctant senior guys loosen up once they realize the session is built around them instead of stiff yearbook-style posing.
Michael’s session is honestly a perfect example of that.
The rooftop images during golden hour ended up being some of my favorites from the morning. The Detroit skyline gave the photos a dramatic feel without overpowering the focus on him. The relaxed outfit choices also worked really well with the downtown setting and helped keep the session feeling authentic to his personality.
The walking shots through the streets and alleyways added movement and made everything feel less posed. That approach works especially well for seniors who don’t necessarily love standing still and smiling at the camera.
And yes… we absolutely got real smiles out of him. I have a feeling his mom is going to be very happy with these.
One thing I always tell parents is this … your son does not need to love having his picture taken for you to end up with amazing senior portraits. A relaxed environment, good conversation, and a session built around their comfort level can completely change the experience.
Michael’s downtown Detroit senior pictures session proved exactly that.
