Every senior pictures session tells a different story, but some sessions feel a little more personal than others.
As a photographer with Armenian roots myself, it was especially meaningful to work with Sofi, a senior at Manoogian School in Southfield. Manoogian School and St. John’s Armenian Church have been important parts of the Armenian community in metro Detroit for generations, so having the opportunity to photograph a fellow Armenian student made this session particularly special.
Sofi’s senior pictures session was designed to showcase several different sides of her personality. During her session, we combined classic graduation portraits, stylish Detroit city images, and musician-inspired portraits featuring her bass guitar.
The result was a collection of images that felt uniquely her.
Senior Pictures at the Fox Theater
We began the session at one of Detroit’s finest theaters, the Fox Theater.
The Fox Theater provided the perfect backdrop for Sofi’s fashion-inspired portraits. Her bright dress stood out beautifully against the historic architecture and iconic marquee, creating images that felt energetic, stylish, and distinctly Detroit.
One of the things I love about senior pictures is the ability to incorporate different looks into a single session. While the graduation portraits celebrated Sofi’s accomplishments, the Fox Theater images highlighted her personality and sense of style.
Detroit offers an incredible variety of locations within a short distance, making it possible to create a gallery that feels diverse and customized to each senior.
Detroit Institute of Arts Senior Pictures
After finishing at the Fox Theater, we headed deeper into downtown Midtown for a completely different vibe. the Detroit Institute of Arts.
The grand architecture and sweeping staircases provided the perfect setting for Sofi’s graduation portraits. Her cap and gown images captured the excitement of reaching such an important milestone while creating a timeless look that will never go out of style.
The DIA continues to be one of my favorite locations for senior pictures because it offers a classic and elegant backdrop that works beautifully for graduation portraits. The architecture creates a sense of significance that feels appropriate for celebrating years of hard work and academic achievement.
For seniors looking for a polished and sophisticated look, it’s hard to beat.
Senior Pictures with a Bass Guitar
The final portion of the session focused on one of Sofi’s biggest interests: music.
As a bass player in a rock band, it was important to include images that reflected this part of her life. After all, senior pictures should be about more than simply documenting what someone looks like during their senior year. They should also capture who they are.
The urban Detroit locations worked perfectly for these musician-inspired portraits. The weathered brick, industrial textures, and colorful graffiti created a setting that complemented the rock-and-roll feel we wanted to achieve.
These ended up being some of the most personal images from the session because they showcased something that plays a meaningful role in Sofi’s life outside of school.
Years from now, those photographs will serve as a reminder not only of her senior year, but also of the interests and passions that helped define this chapter of her life.
Celebrating Individuality Through Senior Pictures
One of the things I enjoy most about senior photography is helping each student create a session that reflects their unique story.
No two seniors are exactly alike, and their portraits shouldn’t be either.
For Sofi, that meant combining her achievements at Manoogian School, her connection to Detroit, and her passion for music into a single session. By blending these different elements together, we created a collection of images that feels authentic and personal.
As someone who values family heritage and community, it was especially rewarding to work with a family connected to the Armenian community that has played such an important role in metro Detroit.
