“What should I wear for professional business headshots?” is a common question I receive all of the time. Everyone that decides to schedule a session for professional headshots obviously wants to look their best! Why wouldn’t they? Opinions of people are often made within the first 8 seconds, so it is critical to have a headshot that helps create the impression you want them to have.
I always recommend to clients that they bring multiple wardrobe options to photo shoots for professional business headshots. We can look through them and together decide what might look best based on how they intend to use the images. Once we narrow the options down, we will option take a couple of quick photos to see how each option will photograph. I have found this process key in helping clients what to ultimately choose. Also, I typically suggest that their face should draw the attention in the image so don’t use bright colors and patterns. So, even though they “like” one look better on a day to day basis, they will often select a different option based entirely on how it actually looks in a photograph.
As I have suggested in my FAQ and Top 10 Tips for Professional Head Shots, one of the most important considerations is to determine how the image will be used. Are you a CEO/CIO? An Attorney? Marketing professional? Graphic Designer? Sales Manager? You should definitely take your line of business into consideration when trying to determine what will look best for professional headshots.
I included a couple of test images from Jim’s recent session below. These are some of the unprocessed shots I took early during his session to help determine which shirt, tie and jacket color to use for the final images. Which shirt and tie combination do you think looks the best? Which jacket looks the best? Please use the voting buttons below to share your opinion:
