Senior pictures should truly reflect who your kid is. It might seem obvious, but it’s easy to lose sight of that when you start seeing the same poses, backgrounds, and the typical, formulaic approach. Lilyana’s session was a perfect example of what happens when we step away from that formula and design the shoot specifically with the student in mind.
Lilyana is a senior at Lake Orion High School in Lake Orion, Michigan. For her senior pictures , we headed to Detroit and took advantage of several distinct areas of the city. Graffiti, old brick buildings, hidden alleyways, and classic architecture offered us a wide variety of backdrops. Add in three completely different outfits, and Lilyana’s session evolved as we made our way through the city.
For Lilyana’s first look, she went with a floral dress, a white sweater, and white shoes. We paired that softer outfit with bright white stonework and Detroit’s classic architecture. Her photo shoot immediately shifted to clean and timeless.
One of my favorite looks combined an oversized hoodie in shades of brown and pink with black cargo pants and chunky black shoes. It had that cool streetwear vibe that fit perfectly with Detroit’s graffiti, brickwork, and historic architecture.
Lilyana switched things up and opted for a green dress, a black leather jacket, and boots. That simple wardrobe change took us in a totally different direction. We worked in Detroit’s brick alleyways, alongside fire escapes, and in a few less obvious spots that often go unnoticed. The leather jacket fit that setting perfectly, while the green dress added a touch of sophistication. We mixed full-body shots with tighter portraits to keep the gallery from looking like a repetition of the same photo against different backgrounds.
That contrast is exactly what I love most about extended senior portrait sessions. Your son or daughter doesn’t have to choose between casual or dressy, graffiti or classic architecture, or edgy versus traditional. They can have a little bit of everything.
