Portraits in the snow … BRrrrrrrr! Yes, shooting sessions for portraits in the snow can be a cold job, but the results are often quite beautiful. Crisp white snow sticking to evergreen boughs can only captured during winter. I regularly shoot portraits session throughout Metro Detroit in the Winter and often have a waiting list for just the right conditions to blow in. In fact, more and more high school seniors are scheduling a second session during the winter to specifically capture snow!
For those of you interested in scheduling a session, here are my Top 3 Tips for portraits in the snow:
- The Right Temperature – You may be anxious to jump right into the white fluffy stuff for your session, but trust me … if it’s too cold, your face will show it! Nobody looks good with dry chapped lips and a red wind-burned face! Optimally, hold your session on a day when the temperature and wind chill factor are at least 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Fuzzy is Best – Wearing a sleek ski jacket may keep you keep you warm and repel snow and water on the slopes, but it is not going to photograph the best. I have found that fuzzy and textured layers provide the best results. Classic options like a wool peacoat with knit hat, scarf and mittens look great! Better yet, wear a nice down jacket with a fur rimmed hood!
- Have Fun – That’s right! Run around … better yet, ROLL around … in the snow! Pick it up! Blow it from hands! Pack it into snow balls! It’s time to be a little kid again and enjoy the time outside!
