As a Detroit headshot photographer, I regularly shoot headshots in the studio as well as on-location for environment headshot sessions. Unlike a studio headshot session that uses strobe lighting and a plain, nondescript background to put the focus on the subject’s face, an environmental headshot is done on-location and captures the subject with authentic surroundings. They can either be done with studio lighting like those from an executive headshot session we did for a Metro Detroit consulting company or with available, natural light.
Recently, Northwestern University asked me to do a natural light environmental headshot session for one of their grad students being featured in their “Student Stories” articles. The first image below is the one that was ultimately used on their website. This is a great example showing the raw, “as shot” image along with the final cropped version that was used online. I also included a couple other environmental headshots we did at the same location to give Northwestern University some options. It is also worth noting that they specifically requested a “natural light” session. Only the available, natural light in the rooms were used for these images. No studio strobes or flashes were used whatsoever for these images.
