Some seniors show up with a few ideas. Isabella showed up with a plan.
Isabella is a senior at Annapolis High School in Dearborn Heights, and she knew exactly what she wanted from her senior pictures. The goal was never a traditional senior session. She wanted something darker, moodier, and unmistakably gothic.
Her family booked a two-hour a la carte senior portrait session and we did the entire session on Belle Isle in Detroit.
What made this one especially fun was how much thought Isabella put into it before I ever picked up the camera.
Gothic Senior Pictures With a Real Vision
When I arrived, Isabella and her family had already been there for about an hour setting everything up. Candles were placed exactly where she wanted them. Locations had been chosen. Outfits were planned. Even the little details were intentional.
That meant my job wasn’t to convince Isabella what her senior pictures should look like. It was to understand her vision and help bring it to life and honestly, that’s how senior pictures should work.
Your senior doesn’t have to fit into somebody else’s idea of what a senior portrait is supposed to be.
Graffiti, Gothic Architecture, Candles, and Belle Isle
Belle Isle gave us some incredible backdrops for the look Isabella wanted.
The graffiti-covered bridge was perfect with her ripped denim, fishnets, platform shoes, and darker makeup. Adding the candles brought another layer to the scene without making it feel staged just for the sake of being different.
We also used the architecture around the Nancy Brown Peace Carillon. The stone tower, iron gates, cloudy sky, and Isabella’s black lace outfit came together almost perfectly for the gothic feel she had imagined.
Then we changed direction again.
For the final look, Isabella wore a white dress beneath a willow tree. She had string lights woven into the hanging branches, with more candles placed around her. It was softer than the earlier images, but it still fit the overall mood of the session.
Senior Pictures Should Look Like Your Senior
For parents, this session is a great reminder that you don’t have to talk your senior into doing the same pictures everyone else is doing.
If your senior has a strong style, lean into it.
Whether that means gothic senior pictures, vintage fashion, music, sports, cars, cosplay, or something nobody else has thought of yet, those ideas are what make a session personal.
Isabella came in knowing what she wanted and we built the session around her vision rather than trying to tone it down.
That’s exactly the point.
