Senior pictures don’t have to happen in one park, with one outfit, and one look.
Katelyn’s Berkley senior pictures session is a great example of what we can create in just two hours when we mix locations, outfits and styles.
We started on Belle Isle, headed into downtown Detroit, returned to the island, and finished with softball pictures. That gave Katelyn a senior gallery with everything from elegant portraits to casual city images and photos that capture an important part of her high school experience.
Senior Pictures on Belle Isle
Belle Isle gave us two completely different looks.
Katelyn’s blue dress looked incredible against the Detroit skyline and the architecture of the Belle Isle Casino. We worked through several poses and compositions, mixing full-length portraits with closer shots and more relaxed poses.
Later, we returned to Belle Isle for a completely different look near the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. Her floral dress fit naturally with the gardens and greenery.

Downtown Detroit Senior Pictures
Next, we headed downtown for a more urban look.
Katelyn changed into jeans and a black top for pictures around the Fox Theatre and Parker’s Alley. The ornate entrance of the Fox gave us one backdrop, while the brick, greenery and industrial details of Parker’s Alley gave us another.
This is one reason I love photographing senior sessions in Detroit. You don’t have to commit to one aesthetic. We can move between elegant, urban, casual and natural settings during the same session.
Making Senior Pictures Personal
We finished Katelyn’s session with softball.
Instead of treating sports pictures like a completely separate session, we incorporated them into her senior portraits. Her letter jacket, jersey, glove and softball made the final images personal without losing the portrait feel of the rest of the session.
That’s really the goal.
Your senior pictures should look like you, not like everyone else who happened to graduate the same year.
