Some senior picture sessions are all about high energy and big concepts. Others are more about keeping things simple, relaxed, and authentic. Benjamin’s senior pictures session landed perfectly in that second category, and honestly, that approach fit the vibe for Detroit senior pictures session really well.
Benjamin is a senior at Utica Academy of International Studies in Sterling Heights, MI, and he booked the Cum Laude senior pictures package, which includes a 2-hour session. That amount of time worked perfectly for creating a wide mix of images without making the session feel rushed or overwhelming.
We started the session around some of Detroit’s most recognizable architecture, including the Detroit Institute of Arts. The clean stonework, arches, and classic design gave the session a timeless feel right away. Benjamin kept things casual for the first portion of the session with a layered outfit that worked great against the neutral tones of the city. One thing I really liked about this session was how natural everything felt. Nothing was overposed or forced. We kept moving, talked through ideas as we went, and let the locations do some of the heavy lifting.
That relaxed approach is something a lot of parents appreciate, especially when their senior isn’t looking for an over-the-top photoshoot experience. Not every senior wants smoke bombs, sports props, or dramatic concepts, and that’s completely fine. Sessions like this prove you can still create a strong, stylish gallery by focusing on good locations, natural expressions, and variety throughout the session.
After exploring some of the architectural locations downtown, we headed toward the city’s more urban textures and alleyways. Detroit is packed with hidden spots that create completely different looks within just a few blocks. One minute you’re surrounded by historic buildings, and the next you’re working with brick textures, industrial details, and quieter side streets that give the session a more modern feel. Those transitions are one of the reasons Detroit remains such a versatile location for senior portraits.
One of my favorite stops from Benjamin’s session was along the waterfront at Belle Isle. The bright spring colors, skyline views, and lake backdrop added a completely different look to the session and helped balance the urban feel from earlier in the day. If you’ve been searching for ideas for outdoor city sessions, my dedicated Belle Isle senior pictures page shows why this spot continues to be one of the best locations in metro Detroit for senior portraits.
Benjamin also changed into a blue suit later in the session, which added another layer of variety to the gallery. That mix of casual and polished looks is something I always encourage during senior sessions because it creates a more complete final collection for both seniors and parents. The casual outfits usually feel the most natural in the moment, while the dressier images often become favorites for graduation announcements, wall art, and family gifts later on.
One thing I think parents sometimes underestimate is how much variety you can accomplish in a shorter session when the locations are planned intentionally. The Cum Laude package is designed for seniors who want more than just a quick yearbook-style experience but don’t necessarily need an all-day session. With the right mix of locations and outfits, a 2-hour session can still create an incredibly diverse gallery.
Benjamin’s session came together with a great balance of classic, modern, casual, and polished images while still keeping the overall experience relaxed from start to finish.
