There’s a reason so many families consider Ann Arbor for senior pictures. You can move from quiet wooded trails and river views to some of the most recognizable architecture in Michigan without making the session feel like a production. For Maxwell’s senior pictures, that variety was exactly what his family wanted.

Maxwell is a senior at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, but they decided to make the trip to Ann Arbor for his session. They wanted a mix of nature and architecture, and Ann Arbor gave us plenty of both without forcing the session into one specific look.

We started outdoors where the fall color was still showing off a little. The river, exposed tree roots, leaves, and wooded paths created a relaxed setting that felt completely different from the more formal locations later in the session. Those images are some of my favorites because they feel natural and unforced.

From there, we shifted into a completely different look with classic Ann Arbor architecture. The stonework, arches, columns, and steps gave Maxwell’s more dressed-up outfits a strong backdrop without overpowering him. A good senior session should give you variety, but the photos should still feel like they belong together.

That variety is one of the biggest advantages of doing senior pictures in Ann Arbor. Parents often worry that they need to choose between casual outdoor photos and something more polished. You really don’t. With the right planning, you can build both into the same session.

Maxwell also brought his cap and gown, which gave us a chance to create a few images that look ahead to graduation. We worked those into the session naturally instead of making the entire shoot feel like a graduation photo session. It was a nice way to document where he is right now while still keeping the focus on senior portraits.

We also included a few details that were personal to him, including a small keyboard. Those little pieces matter because senior pictures should say something about the student, not just show what they looked like during senior year.
