Senior pictures should feel personal. They should look like your senior, not like a session pulled from the same template everyone else received.
That was exactly the approach for Maxwell’s recent senior picture session. Maxwell is a senior at Dakota High School in Macomb, MI, and his family booked my four-hour Summa Cum Laude senior portrait package. Before the session, they spent some time going through my portfolio and sent me screenshots of locations they liked.
That little bit of homework made a big difference.
Planning Macomb Senior Pictures Around What You Actually Like
One thing I always tell parents is that you don’t need to know exactly where you want to go before booking a session.
You might know you like Detroit. You might know your senior wants something urban. Maybe you’ve seen a rooftop, alley, building, or particular look in my portfolio that caught your attention.
That’s enough.
Maxwell’s family did exactly that. They looked through my previous work, picked out images and locations they liked, and sent those examples to me. From there, I could put together a plan for his session.
Instead of guessing what they wanted, we started with actual visual references.
For parents planning Macomb senior pictures, this is one of the easiest ways to personalize a session. You don’t have to know street names or build an itinerary. Show me what catches your eye, and I can take it from there.
Four Hours Means Plenty of Room for Variety
Maxwell booked my Summa Cum Laude senior portrait package, which includes four hours of session time.
That gave us plenty of freedom to create two very different looks.
We started with Maxwell in a blue suit, using some of downtown Detroit’s classic architecture for a polished, more formal feel. The lighter stone, large staircases, and architectural details gave the suit a great backdrop without making the pictures feel stiff or overly traditional.
Then we headed to a rooftop where we could work the Detroit skyline into the session. The city views brought a completely different feel to the images while still working perfectly with the suit.
Later, Maxwell changed into a black polo, shorts, and sneakers.
That immediately shifted the session into something much more casual.
Brick buildings, doorways, side streets, and colorful graffiti created a relaxed look that feels completely different from the earlier portraits. Same senior, same session, completely different sides of his style.
That kind of variety is one of the biggest advantages of having more time.
Dakota High School Senior Pictures Don’t Have to Stay in Macomb
Being a Dakota High School senior doesn’t mean your senior pictures have to happen five minutes from home.
Downtown Detroit gives Macomb families a huge range of options within one session. Classic architecture, rooftops, graffiti, historic buildings, modern city views, and quieter side streets can all look completely different depending on wardrobe and lighting.
Maxwell’s session is a great example of why I don’t approach Dakota High School senior pictures with a preset list of locations.
The goal isn’t to recreate someone else’s session.
It’s to figure out what your senior likes and build around that.
Start With the Photos You Like
If you’re starting to plan Macomb senior pictures, don’t worry if you don’t have every detail figured out yet.
Take a look through my portfolio. Save a few pictures that stand out. Maybe it’s the location. Maybe it’s the lighting, clothing, background, or overall feel.
Send them to me.
That gives us a starting point, and from there we can build a session that actually fits your senior instead of forcing them into a cookie-cutter plan.
