One of the best parts of planning senior pictures is that the session does not have to fit into one specific style.
Joel is a senior at Novi High School, and for his session we mixed classic Detroit views, architecture, colorful murals, and a few locations that gave everything a more relaxed urban feel. His family booked my three-hour Magna Cum Laude a la carte package, which gave us enough time to move around the city and build in some real variety.
Planning Novi Senior Pictures Around the Light
Joel and his family had already looked through my portfolio and identified several locations they wanted to use. That gave us a great starting point, but the actual route still needed to stay flexible.
That is something parents do not always think about when planning senior pictures.
A location might look great in a photo you saw online, but the sun can completely change how it looks at a different time of day. Some locations can also become busy or unavailable without much warning. During Joel’s session, we adjusted the plan based on the sun conditions and what was accessible as we moved through Detroit.
Instead of forcing the original plan, we worked with what the city gave us that morning.
The result was a much better session.
From Belle Isle to Southwest Detroit
We started with some classic Detroit scenery, including Belle Isle and views of the skyline. Joel also wore his Novi High School letter jacket for part of the session, which added a personal connection to his senior year without turning the entire session into school-themed photos.
From there, we mixed in the Ambassador Bridge, Southwest Detroit, and the colorful murals around Mexicantown.
Later, we worked around St. Andrew’s Hall for a completely different architectural look.
That variety is one reason I love photographing Detroit senior pictures. Within one session, we can go from water and skyline views to historic buildings, murals, brick streets, and more casual city scenes.
Senior Pictures Built Around Your Senior
For parents planning Novi senior pictures, you do not need to come into the process with every detail figured out.
If you already know a few locations or looks you love, send them to me. We can use those ideas to create a plan and then adjust as needed once we are out shooting.
That flexibility matters. Great senior pictures are not about checking locations off a list. They are about creating a session that feels natural, personal, and actually fits your senior.
