Emmeline is a senior at Oxford High School in Oxford, MI, and she came into her senior session knowing exactly what she wanted. Her family booked a two-hour session in downtown Detroit and specifically chose the morning golden hour so we could take advantage of softer light, lighter crowds, and a few locations where the city lights would still be glowing.
For parents planning an Oxford senior pictures session, that kind of preparation can make a huge difference. Emmeline and her family had already picked out the Detroit locations they liked, so we were able to build the session around those ideas instead of spending time figuring everything out once we arrived.
Why Morning Golden Hour Works So Well in Detroit
There is a practical side to photographing downtown Detroit early in the morning. Streets are quieter, sidewalks are easier to work with, and some of the locations that get busy later in the day are much easier to photograph without constant distractions in the background.
There is also the light. Morning golden hour gives us softer directional light between the buildings, and arriving early creates opportunities to photograph some of Detroit while exterior and interior lights are still on.
That combination gave Emmeline’s session a polished city look without losing the relaxed feel parents usually want from senior pictures.
Two Hours, Several Very Different Looks
We moved through several locations Emmeline had chosen ahead of time, including Greektown, St. Andrew’s Hall, the Fisher Building, and different streets and alleys around downtown.
Her wardrobe changes helped each location feel different too. One part of the session had a casual city feel, while her dresses worked beautifully with the more formal architecture and interiors.
The Fisher Building was especially nice for creating something more elegant. Then we could switch gears completely and use brick alleys, city streets, and the character around St. Andrew’s Hall.
That is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing Detroit senior pictures. You can create several completely different looks without spending half the session driving between locations.
Planning Oxford Senior Pictures That Feel Personal
Senior pictures do not have to happen close to home just because that is where your senior goes to school. If your Oxford High School senior loves the look of Detroit, Ann Arbor, nature, architecture, graffiti, or something entirely different, we can build the session around that.
Emmeline’s family knew the look they wanted, chose their locations, and picked a time of day that helped us get the most from them. That gave us a session that felt organized without ever feeling overly planned.
