As a Detroit model photographer, I have the opportunity to work with a huge number of models and stylists throughout southeast Michigan. One of my recent sessions was with Ellyn and the stylists at Studio 1 Salon for a submission to the Goldwell Color Zoom 2011 competition. The Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge is specifically designed to find the most creative stylists, colorists and trend specialists from around the world. The challenge this year was the creative interpretation of the theme Play Strong. National winners in the Color Zoom 2011 competition will take part in the international finale in South Beach, Florida later this year in October. Woo hoo!
I kept the lighting simple for the session, but still set it up for a dramatic look using a total of 4 Elinchrom strobes. 2 of the strobes were use on the background for the white, high key effect. The other 2 strobes were used for the main and fill lights. The main (key) light was a 53″ Octobox and the fill was from a Lastolite Kickerlite floor softbox. The Kickerlite provided a nice soft fill from below really accentuating facial features staying true to the Play Strong theme. The last shot below was lit using only the 53″ Octobox.
We captured some really incredible model head shots of Ellyn throughout the day. It was really hard for me to narrow down the selection for this blog post, but in the end used six of my favorite photos.
