Being a Detroit model photographer, I regularly work with models, hair stylists and makeup artists throughout southeast Michigan. In May, I was able to work with Studio 1 Salon for a hair stylist submission to the Goldwell Color Zoom 2011 competition. The Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge is specifically designed to find the most creative stylists, colorists and trend specialists from around the world. The challenge this year was the creative interpretation of the theme Play Strong. National winners in the Color Zoom 2011 competition will take part in the international finale in South Beach, Florida later this year in October.
The lighting for the session was kept fairly straightfoward using a total of 4 Elinchrom strobes and a reflector. Two of the strobes were use on the background for the white, high key effect. The other two strobes were used for the main and fill lights. The reflector was used to help brighten some of the shadows ever so slightly. The main light was a 53″ Octobox and the fill was from a Lastolite Kickerlite floor softbox. This was the first time I have used the Kickerlite for a model session, it was loaned to me specifically for this session so I could provide a professional evaluation on it. I found that it provided a nice soft fill from below really accentuating facial features staying true to the Play Strong theme.
We captured some really incredible model head shots of Lori throughout the day using some intense makeup for the Play Strong theme. It was really hard for me to narrow down the selection for this blog post, but in the end used five of my favorite photos.
