Kate knew the look she wanted for her senior pictures. Flowers, tall grasses, fields, and plenty of natural scenery were high on the list. As a senior at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor, she also had some pretty great options close to home.
We spent part of her two-hour senior pictures session exploring Nichols Arboretum, and the late-summer landscape gave us exactly what we were looking for. Yellow wildflowers were everywhere, surrounded by layers of green that made an amazing backdrop for her portraits.
Senior Pictures With Flowers at Nichols Arboretum
One of the things I love about photographing senior pictures at Nichols Arboretum is that the landscape can become much more than a background. For Kate’s portraits, I could shoot through the flowers and use them in the foreground to create depth and frame her naturally.
Her white top was perfect against all that green and yellow. We added a small bouquet for a few portraits, then switched things up with her blue dress. Same location, completely different look.
Later, Kate changed into a simple black top and jeans. Against the bright flowers and greenery, the darker outfit immediately changed the feel of the photographs again.
That’s a big reason I tell seniors not to get too hung up on finding one “perfect” photo spot. A great outdoor location can give us several different looks just by walking a little farther, changing clothes, or looking at the light differently.
Flowers, Tall Grasses, Woods and Water
Kate didn’t want her entire gallery to look the same, so we went beyond the flowers. We worked with tall grasses, moved into the woods, and photographed along the water as well. Each setting still had the natural feel she wanted, but the photographs changed dramatically from one area to another.
The tall grasses gave us a softer, more open look. The woods added huge trees, exposed roots, and filtered light. Then the water gave us yet another setting without suddenly making the session feel like something completely different.
