Mason is a senior at West Bloomfield High School, and his mom knew she wanted his senior pictures to have a Detroit feel. That gave us plenty to work with because Detroit can go from classic architecture to graffiti, rooftops, sports landmarks, and gritty brick in just a few blocks.
For parents planning West Bloomfield senior pictures, that kind of variety is a big deal. You do not have to choose between polished and urban, or between traditional portraits and something with more personality. You can have both.
Starting with Classic Detroit Architecture
We started with a cleaner, more classic look using some of Detroit’s historic architecture. Mason’s burgundy shirt and light pants worked really well against the pale stone, arches, and older buildings, and it gave us a set of portraits that felt timeless without looking stiff.
Those images gave us a strong foundation for the session. From there, we were able to move into completely different surroundings without the gallery feeling disconnected.
Graffiti, Brick, and a Different Side of the City
Once Mason changed into his plaid shirt and jeans, the whole feel shifted. We worked in graffiti-covered alleys, weathered brick, textured walls, and a few less obvious downtown spots that gave the session a little more edge.
That contrast is one of the reasons I love photographing Detroit senior pictures. The city gives you so many different looks that a senior session can feel like several mini sessions rolled into one.
We also used St. Andrew’s Hall, rooftops, and a few city streets along the way. One of my favorite images from the session came with the Renaissance Center fading into the fog behind Mason, which gave the photo a completely different mood from the rest of the morning.
Making the Session Feel Like Your Senior
Mason’s session also included a stop at Comerica Park, which gave us another unmistakably Detroit backdrop. Instead of trying to make every image look the same, we let each location bring something different to the session.
That is really the goal. Senior pictures should not feel like a checklist of poses in front of whatever background happens to be nearby. They should feel like they belong to your senior.
If you are planning West Bloomfield senior pictures and like the idea of using Detroit for the session, there is a lot of room to make it personal. We can mix architecture, graffiti, city streets, sports landmarks, rooftops, or whatever fits your senior best.
