Late summer is a fantastic time for senior portraits in Michigan. Everything is still lush and green, wildflowers are in full bloom, and you can achieve a wide variety of styles without spending the whole session driving from place to place. This shoot was the perfect example of that.
We started with a white dress in an area filled with yellow wildflowers. I loved the combination right away; the white really popped against the greenery, while the yellow flowers added a splash of color without stealing the spotlight from her.
Next, we moved into an area with tall grass and gathered a small bouquet of wildflowers to use in some of the shots. It was a simple idea, but it resulted in some of my favorite images from the entire session. The tall grass softened the scene, giving the portraits a completely different mood compared to the bright, flower-filled photos we had just taken.
That’s why I love shooting outdoors. You don’t always have to change locations to get a different look; sometimes, the best spot is just a few meters away.
I’m always on the lookout for details like that during a session. A striking tree, an interesting cluster of flowers, or even tall grass can turn into something far better than I initially imagined. I don’t want every photo to be just someone standing in front of a pretty background. When a location offers something unique, I want to make the most of it.
