As a Detroit dance photographer, I have the opportunity to work with a lot of aspiring dancers as they build out their dance audition portfolios. Some of my favorites sessions have been with ballerinas in the studio.
Most recently, I have been enjoying the recent shoots I have been doing for individual dancers in the Metro Detroit area and am looking forward to more dance and movement shoots this summer! I love doing dance photography sessions on location, but nothing beats the studio with controlled lighting.
For Peyton’s shoot, we kept the lighting simple. In fact, very simple. We uses a couple Elinchrom soft boxes for all of the shots with her wearing the black outfit against a black background. By keeping the lighting so simple, we were able to capture some very stunning shots with dramatic lighting. I absolutely love these images and it was very difficult to only select a few for this blog post. Which one is your favorite?
If you are just starting out building a dance audition portfolio, you should have 3 basic shots at a minimum: a professional head shot, a dance shot in leotard and tights and a dance shot in costume. The color of the leotard does not matter – the quality of the look of the dancer in the photo is what is important. A nice presentation of the portfolio is always a good idea
